My major discipline in GALILEO is psychology. Upon searching
for one I have never worked in before I realized that many of the sources use ProQuest
and EBSCOhost. Both databases I know I’ve used before. I found one call “web of
knowledge” it is a Thomas Reuters website that is apparently “Is the world’s
leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals”
according to their about us page (http://thomsonreuters.com/about/).
I searched “baseball” since I am currently writing about my Steve Blass Disease
project. You would never guess what one of the key words in the title of the
first link was “Decision taking under pressure: Evidence on football manager dismissals in
Argentina and their consequences”. Football? No, I said baseball.
What is kind of funny is that the seventh source mentioned
the word baseball and the nifty database highlighted the word baseball for me.
That could be useful during research.
The
difference between subject specific databases and the Discovery tool is that
the subject specific database is great for something directly relating that
field. Like baseball does not directly relate to psychology. If I searched
something like PTSD, a psychology database would be preferred over a literature
database. If I wanted to search baseball I would choose the Discovery tool
because I could use information that could fall under any category (history of
baseball, baseball in the media, etc).
The results you got from your blog post is very interesting.

However, it is still useful in an odd way as you stated in the blog post that "the 7th result relayed you to a baseball database." I agree with you about the subject specific database being great for searching topics related to a field. However, I disagree on the fact that Discovery should be used in your research portion of the research process. I believe it is best for finding a specific angle for your research. That is when you reference to the specific database search and find evidence to back up your angle's argument in a specific database that gives you better information and deeper incite on the topic you research.
It did not relay me to a baseball database. It relayed me to a baseball article because I was within the database of "web of knowledge".
DeleteIf you already have your angle, searching a subject specific database would be better depending on your topic. I want to take a psychological approach to the legacy of the Steve Blass Disease- A baseball oriented condition. I wanted to take a neurological angle so I searched medical databases as compared to a general search through all the databases. I think the Discovery tool displays search results that fit in different categories that may not go with the angle you intend to go with.Does that make sense?

ReplyDeleteHi Kayla, It seems like you have definitely taken advantage of the resources available to you. I think its great you have experienced a certain database before doing this blog. I think the more familiar you are the better researcher you can become in the near future! Overall good post!
